CLASSICAL COMICS SCOOP SILVER IPPY WITH THEIR FIRST BOOK

The all-British graphic novel Henry V, has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 2008 Independent Publishers Awards (the “IPPYs”) in America.

This year’s contest attracted a total of 3,175 entries and saw the Original Text Henry V, which was released in November 2007, win runner-up in the Graphic Novel/Drawn Book- Drama/Documentary category.

“The quality of this year's entries has been totally amazing” – Independent Publisher

Chairman of Classical Comics, Clive Bryant said, “We are absolutely delighted to win this award with our first book. To see this dream become a reality, and then to gain recognition for our books has been a truly emotional experience. In fact, we’ve had such a positive response to both Henry V and Macbeth that we’ve increased the number of titles in production”.

Classical Comics’ pioneering multiple text versions of well-loved literature have proven to be a success around the globe, particularly with students and teachers, who welcome this vibrant, colourful way of introducing the classics.

Two further adaptations, Frankenstein and Jane Eyre, are due to be published in September this year; with another five titles being released between October 2008 and January 2009.

ORANG UTAN SOARS WITH THE EAGLES

Comic studio picks up a treble nomination

UK comic studio Orang Utan Comics has been nominated in three of the categories for this year’s prestigious Eagle Awards.

Anthology title “Eleventh Hour” ,which relaunches in June from AAM/Markosia, was nominated for “Favourite Black and White Comic -  British”.   Writer Peter Rogers, who co-founded the studio said “We put out two issues of our anthology title ourselves last year and the feedback from readers and reviewers was great.   Once the book was picked up by a publisher we knew we were doing something right and this nomination really is the icing on the cake. “

Another founding member of the studio Tanzanian artist Azim Akberali picked up two nominations, “Favourite Newcomer Artist” and “Favourite Artist: Fully Painted Artwork”.   Akberali provided pencils on two of the stories in “Eleventh Hour” as well as providing breathtaking painted pin ups and covers.  “For years my hero has been Alex Ross” Akberali said “and now I’m nominated in a category alongside him.  I’m still pinching myself”.

The Eagle Awards have been running since 1976. Considered by many to be the true people’s awards the Eagles are voted for by fans. You can vote for this year’s awards at http://www.eagleawards.co.uk/vote.asp. This year’s  Awards Ceremony takes place on the evening of Saturday 10th May as part of the  Bristol Comic Expo.

EGMONT UK TO PUBLISH GAREN EWING'S CLASSIC SMALL PRESS HIT RAINBOW ORCHID

The Rainbow Orchid, written and drawn by Garen Ewing, is a new and exciting comic strip adventure to be published by Egmont in 2009. The Rainbow Orchid will join the Tintin series on Egmont's publishing list. The Rainbow Orchid is the latest in a number of recent acquisitions by Egmont UK as it grows its share of the children's book market in the UK.

The Rainbow Orchid is an adventure story in the "Ligne Claire" style, the term given to the drawing style developed by Hergé and others in the 1970's.

Set in the 1920s, The Rainbow Orchid tells of the search for a mythical flower last mentioned by the ancient Greek philosopher and botanist, Theophrastus. The story's hero, Julius Chancer, is a determined adventurer who travels to the forgotten valleys of India to find the orchid while the villainous Urkaz Grope does everything in his power to stop him. The story will be available in three volumes, with book one publishing in 2009.

The story has been in existence as a number of short series and an online comic for some time and was nominated for two National Comic awards at the Bristol Comics Festival. The series already enjoys a varied international readership online.

David Riley for Egmont publishing said, "The Rainbow Orchid is traditional adventure at its best, and a fantastically modern creation. The concept and design have real stand-out quality and the series will appeal to fans of comics, design, illustration, or those who just love a good adventure! The market has never been more right for a series like The Rainbow Orchid."

Author and illustrator Garen Ewing has been writing and drawing comics since childhood.. In 2002 work on The Rainbow Orchid began in earnest and the series was soon picked for representation by Blake Friedmann.

Oliver Munson at Blake Friedmann said, "From the outset, Garen and I were extremely impressed by Egmont's passion and vision for The Rainbow Orchid. When you look at the enormous success they've had over the years with household names such as Tintin, we really could not have found a better home for young Mr. Chancer."

VIOLENT! Gets Virtual & GIRLY Goes Global

Saturday 22nd March 2008 saw the official launch of Factor Fiction's The Girly Comic and Violent! as web comics. Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed that an archive of strips has already been building up on a daily basis since the beginning of the year.

To celebrate the launch, a brand new full colour comic strip Sisters of the Head will start on The Girly Comic site on Saturday. It has been penned by Doctor Who novelist Daniel O'Mahony, and illustrated by small press supremo Terry “Sleaze Castle” Wiley.

Both web comics will debut new strips, threaded alongside ongoing projects to put the entire Factor Fiction strip archive online.

For those who have never picked up a copy of Violent!, you'll be able to read serials such as The Flatworm, Spare Parts, MageWorks and Knuckles from the beginning. Plus a brand new four panel strip series: The Silent Service  by Jay Eales and Paul McCaffrey: http://factorfictionpress.co.uk/violentwebcomic/category/silent-service/

Small press and Girly Comic fans will be aware that all sixteen print issues of The Girly Comic include work by autobiographical comic goddess Lee Kennedy,

Selina Lock, co - Editor of the Factor Fiction line of comics said:

"we are very proud to be compiling an online archive of her work as part of The Girly Comic website. Those who are unfamiliar with her work should check it out now: http://factorfictionpress.co.uk/webcomic/category/lee-kennedy/

We're also excited to announce that over the coming months we'll be making all the Oddcases strips by Alistair Pulling & Bevis Musson available on The Girly Comic site. This will not only be the stories published in the comics, but also the early uncollected Oddcases strips, and hopefully some new ones: http://factorfictionpress.co.uk/webcomic/category/oddcases/ "

Fans of print shouldn't worry though, as part of the overall plan Factor Fiction will also be producing book collections, including The Girly Comic Book, an as-yet unnamed Lee Kennedy Collection and compilations of the new strips featured on the sites. In the meantime, you can still buy copies of issues 1-16 of The Girly Comic and 1-13 of Violent! from the online store: http://factorfictionpress.co.uk/shop.html and - of course- from smallzone.

In 2008, Factor Fiction begin their eighth year of trading and Selina said:

"Factor Fiction mutates again, and is ready to take on the world. We hope you'll join us."
